Good news for Blackberry users! We have a new version for these devices. Please download below and share your experiences here. Please not that this is not an official release and only experimental. Your detailed feedback is appreciated.

Here's the latest experimental Blackberry version

Release Notes:
This version has an extra sub menu, "Use BB transport" in "Connection settings", available options are:

    * Direct TCP
    * Force MDS/BES
    * Using BIS transport
    * Option 1
    * Option 2

Test each one with the two "Connection type" settings ("HTTP Binding" and "TCP"). Hopefully there is some combination which can work for every Blackberry, whether BIS/BES or other.

Remember to post your feedback Very Happy

Thanks

Hi,

download the experimental version, and seems don't works fine under BIS transport.

I tried: Auto, TCP, HTTP, Sockets

always appears the error:
"Connection to the server has failed. This may be caused by (temporary) insufficient network coverage or incorrect network settings on your phone"

My coverage is OK

Hi,

I have BB 8310 and got error message saying " the application gizmo has attempted to open a connection to a location inside the firewall and outside the firewall which is not allowed by your IT policy". I checked it and all connection allow. So what's wrong with it? upgrade?

thanks

Allways connect by tcp, not by BIS.

I reboot the BB but occurs the same.

I can't uninstall Gizmo now.

I don't know if this is just a bb related problem. I can place a call on my bb and it rings, i answer, but the other person (on a windows pc) gets a message saying I will call you on xxxxxxxx. But I still get charged for the call. My call out credit gets used even though the call seems to fail.

One other thing I've noticed is that the notifications don't work either. I had to install the 'no audio' version because the other version kept falling over when starting. Neither vibrate or sound notifications work.

I've tried some more test calls and still the same results. My credit gets used up but i can't hear the other person. I tried recording my own voicemail and that's the same. My bb rings but there's no one on the other end.

I downloaded the bb3 version (1.13.13) which when installed replaced the 1.12.something version I had previously installed.

This was installed on a blackberry 8320 (curve) on t-mobile, connected to the wifi network at my home.

I set for TCP socket/direct tcp connection. I do not have time right now to try other permutations.

My one test call worked (the call set up, and then rang the cell phone to complete the call.)

Request --- I am looking forward to a version that uses TCP/IP directly for completion of the call media, rather than triggering a call-back to the cellular network's connection. In effect, I'd prefer that the call be placed over the existing TCP/IP network directly. I have no idea if this is even possible given the Blackberry OS API and services, but it would sure be nice.

I am now using gizmoproject on a Nokia 770 (OS 2006) and a GT286 ATA, and I am hoping eventually to be able to use the Blackberry in this same fashion.

Tks,

Dave

I have a BlackBerry Curve 8320 with 802.11b/g wifi, but don't have any sort of data plan. Is gizmo5 going to be able to work through my home 802.11b/g wifi network, NOT NECESSARILY THROUGH A MOBILE DATA PLAN? If the answer is no, I would like to know if there is a limitation, or what's the reason. Thanks

The Gizmo 5 for mobile application was built for phones without WiFi as a means to IM and initiate a callback for voicecalls via GPRS. Gizmo5 for mobile installed on a Nokia phone with WiFi and in offline mode (No SIM) seems to work fine over WiFi, however I have not tested the Curve but I assume it should have similar results. Let me know what you come up with.

I get this error message from Gizmo5 on the Curve 8320: "Connection to the server has failed. This might by (temporary) insufficient network coverage or incorrect network settings on your phone" after Gizmo5 tried to connect through both http and tcp. I have 802.11 b/g wifi coverage in this spot, the internal browser works fine, it's not a network issue. My Nokia E61i works fine with Gizmo5 on my home wifi netw. I think the issue is with Gizmo5, the Blackberry APIs that Gizmo5 is using, or with the connection string Gizmo5 is using, which should contain some parameter specific to BB which enables the transport via the device's wifi feature (;DeviceSide=True;ConnectionUID=S TCP-WiFi;ConnectionSetup=delayed;retrynocontext=true). Please note also that only the 8320 has wifi amongst all the Curve variants.

I just tried an experiment with my (T-Mobile) 8320 Curve. I removed the SIM card entirely, and restarted the phone with only WiFi enabled. The phone found my (home) access point, but didn't appear to fully come online (the "WIFI" icon on the display was in it's darker (unconnected) state, and in the network station screen, the connection indicator stayed in the yellow state - (access point acquired, but no IP traffic flow.)

I tried running Opera Mini (which doesn't appear to depend on the blackberry network) and it started but there was no IP traffic I could see, so it didn't load a website.

I suspect someone at RIM thought of this scenario very early on (using a Blackberry as a solely wifi device without a subscription) and precluded that mode.

But the internal browser works without a SIM, right?
Wifi on the BBs (8320 and 8820) is relatively new, and software developers did not consider taking advantage of this feature. It's a shame that even RIM itself, which advertises the wifi feature, and is the manufacturer of the device, doesn't care that the apps which come with the phone (besides the internal browser) are not optimized to work with the wifi when available. That's why I love my Nokia and its freedom. Let's hope that someone here will pass this to the gizmo5 developers and we'll soon get an experimental version of gizmo5 which works with the wifi of the BB Curve 8320.
